Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations has called for restraint, diplomatic engagement, and strict adherence to international law as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.

Addressing a UN Security Council debate on Tuesday, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad warned that the region is facing multiple interconnected crises requiring urgent de-escalation efforts to prevent further instability.

He said the situation remains “extremely volatile” and stressed the need for compliance with the UN Charter, international law, and Security Council resolutions. He added that responsible conduct and diplomacy were essential to avoid further escalation.

The envoy emphasised that the Palestinian issue remains central to regional peace and stability, noting strong international participation in ongoing discussions.

On Gaza, he said the ceasefire had provided temporary relief but remained fragile amid continued violations. He stated that more than 800 Palestinians had been killed since the ceasefire announcement, calling for full respect of the truce and increased humanitarian assistance.

He also highlighted worsening conditions in the occupied West Bank, citing rising settler violence, expansion of illegal settlements, and legislative actions he described as violations of international law.

The ambassador further warned that broader regional tensions are posing risks to global peace and economic stability, including disruptions in key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which he said are also affecting Pakistan.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s diplomatic stance, he said dialogue and restraint must remain the priority, adding that Islamabad is actively supporting diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

He reiterated that a lasting resolution to the Middle East crisis depends on addressing the Palestinian question, stating that the establishment of a Palestinian state remains the only viable path toward comprehensive peace.
