ISLAMABAD: A record $6.3 billion cryptocurrency hack targeting Binance has raised concerns across the digital asset industry, prompting major exchanges to strengthen security measures and improve coordination against cyberattacks, Reuters reported on Saturday.

The breach has exposed vulnerabilities in cryptocurrency platforms as digital assets become increasingly integrated into the global financial system. Industry executives and security experts have called for stronger cybersecurity measures, improved employee training and faster information-sharing to prevent further attacks.

How Did Hackers Breach Binance’s Security Systems?

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, halted withdrawals following Thursday’s attack and said it would use company funds to cover the losses.

Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the complex attack may have originated from a software engineer’s compromised laptop, potentially giving hackers access to systems used to process withdrawals. The company later identified additional breaches, while software designed to erase traces of the attack complicated the investigation.

US blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis said the attack bore similarities to previous cryptocurrency thefts attributed to North Korea. However, the allegations have not been independently confirmed.

Security experts also suspect that social engineering, a technique in which attackers manipulate individuals into disclosing sensitive information or granting access to computer systems, may have played a role in the breach.

How Are Cryptocurrency Exchanges Responding to the Hack?

Major cryptocurrency exchanges have begun reviewing their security arrangements following the incident. Coinbase said it had adjusted its offline cryptocurrency key-storage systems as a precaution, while Kraken said its security teams were monitoring industry incidents to identify potential vulnerabilities.

Meanwhile, stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle reportedly froze nearly $1.57 billion and $800 million, respectively, linked to the stolen funds.

OKX chief executive Star Xu called for a coordinated, real-time alert system that would allow cryptocurrency platforms to share information about attacks, coordinate responses and temporarily freeze suspected stolen assets.

The breach also affected cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin falling more than 4% and Ether declining over 5% on Thursday before recovering some losses on Friday.

Industry executives expressed confidence that Binance had sufficient financial resources to cover the losses and said the incident was unlikely to cause broader financial repercussions. However, the scale of the breach has renewed calls for stronger security standards as cryptocurrency markets become more closely connected to traditional financial institutions.
