2.9-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Karachi, No Damage Reported

Pakistan Meteorological Department says tremors were recorded at 6:01pm with epicentre located within Karachi.

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Karachi on Friday evening, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD said the earthquake occurred at 6:01pm, with its epicentre located within the port city. The tremors were recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres.

No immediate reports of casualties or property damage were received following the earthquake.

What did PMD report about the earthquake?

According to the Met Office, the earthquake was centred within Karachi and had a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale.

Residents in several parts of the city reported feeling the tremors, although authorities did not report any emergency situation after the incident.

Pakistan is located in a seismically active region due to its position along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making earthquakes a recurring natural hazard.

Why is Pakistan vulnerable to earthquakes?

Pakistan has experienced several major earthquakes in recent decades, causing significant loss of life and damage.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad, Swat and Hunza earlier this year, while the devastating 2005 Azad Kashmir earthquake killed more than 73,000 people and left millions homeless.

In 2021, a powerful earthquake in Harnai, Balochistan, killed at least 20 people and disrupted rescue operations due to landslides.

Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stronger preparedness measures, particularly in earthquake-prone areas where difficult terrain can complicate rescue and relief operations.
