Trump Declares US-Iran Ceasefire MoU ‘Over’ After Renewed Strikes

ANKARA: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underpinning the ceasefire between the United States and Iran was “over,” signalling a collapse of the temporary agreement amid renewed military escalation.

Trump made the remarks during the NATO summit in Ankara, saying the agreement was no longer valid following recent developments in the conflict with Iran.

What Triggered the Collapse of the MoU?

The announcement came after US forces launched fresh airstrikes on Iranian targets despite an earlier commitment to pause military operations during the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The strikes followed attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington blamed on Iran, further intensifying tensions between the two countries.

    How Has the Conflict Escalated?

The renewed US military action has raised concerns that diplomatic efforts to preserve the ceasefire have failed.

The latest escalation comes amid continued exchanges between Washington and Tehran, with both sides accusing each other of violating previous understandings aimed at reducing hostilities.

Analysts warn that the collapse of the MoU could increase the risk of broader regional instability and further disrupt diplomatic efforts.

What Could Be the Regional Impact?

Trump’s declaration is expected to deepen uncertainty across the Middle East, where renewed military operations have already heightened concerns over regional security, international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and global energy markets.

The developments are being closely watched by world leaders attending the NATO summit, as fears grow that continued escalation could undermine prospects for a negotiated settlement.
