Australia Appoints First-Ever Female Army Chief in Historic Military Leadership Shake-Up

Australia has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the country’s first-ever female Chief of Army, marking a historic leadership change in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) amid ongoing efforts to increase gender representation and address allegations of misconduct within the military.

The government announced on Monday that Coyle, currently serving as Chief of Joint Capabilities, will assume command of the army in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the appointment as a landmark moment in the 125-year history of the Australian Army, saying it reflects both progress and the growing role of women in national defence leadership.

Defence Minister Richard Marles called the decision “deeply historic,” noting that Coyle’s rise would serve as a significant example for women currently serving in the armed forces and those considering military careers.

Coyle, 55, joined the military in 1987 and has held several senior operational and strategic roles throughout her career. With this appointment, she will become the first woman to lead any branch of Australia’s military.

Women currently make up around 21 percent of the ADF and approximately 18.5 percent of senior leadership positions. The government has set a target of 25 percent female representation across the force by 2030.

The announcement comes as the ADF continues to face scrutiny following a class-action lawsuit filed last year alleging systemic failure to prevent sexual harassment, discrimination, and abuse within its ranks.

In the same defence reshuffle, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current Chief of Navy, has been appointed as the new Chief of the Australian Defence Force, replacing Admiral David Johnston.

Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley will succeed Hammond as Chief of Navy, completing a broader leadership transition across the country’s military command structure.
