FIFA Opens Disciplinary Cases Against Argentina Over World Cup Incidents

ZURICH: FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina’s football federation and several players following incidents during the World Cup, including a post-final altercation with Spain players and the display of a political banner referencing the Falkland Islands after Argentina’s semifinal victory over England.

The disciplinary cases announced by FIFA on Wednesday include charges against Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes, defender Nahuel Molina, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala over incidents that occurred after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final on July 19.

What Charges Did FIFA Bring Against Argentina Players?

FIFA charged Paredes with three counts of assault related to clashes that occurred shortly after the final whistle.

Molina faces two assault-related charges, while Ayala was charged over an alleged incident involving an assistant coach after the match.

FIFA also charged Molina and Argentina player Thiago Almada with unsporting behaviour. Spain midfielder Gavi faces the same charge.

The disciplinary review also includes allegations of discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, as well as the throwing of objects by spectators during several World Cup matches.

Why Was Argentina Charged Over the Falkland Islands Banner?

Argentina’s football federation was also charged after players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Malvinas are Argentine”) following their 2-1 semifinal victory over England.

FIFA said the charge relates to the use of a sporting event for “demonstrations of a non-sporting nature.”

The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, have been a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Argentina invaded the islands in 1982 under military rule, leading to a 10-week war that ended with a British victory.

British officials had urged FIFA to investigate the banner incident.

FIFA said all parties involved had been given the opportunity to present their responses, after which the FIFA Disciplinary Committee would issue a decision.
