SOCAR Ready to Supply LNG to Pakistan as Islamabad Seeks to Ease Energy Shortfall

Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR has said it is ready to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan once it receives a formal request from Islamabad, according to Reuters.

SOCAR stated that a framework agreement signed in 2025 between SOCAR Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited allows Pakistan to procure LNG cargoes through an accelerated mechanism.

“SOCAR is ready to provide LNG to Pakistan as soon as PLL submits a corresponding request,” the company said, without confirming whether a request has already been made or when deliveries could begin.

Pakistan, which depends heavily on gas for power generation and industry, is facing an ongoing energy shortfall amid declining domestic production and volatility in global LNG prices.

Authorities have already ordered additional LNG supplies for electricity generation as the country continues to experience power shortages ahead of peak summer demand.

Separately, discussions between Pakistan and Qatar are reportedly at an advanced stage for the supply of at least four LNG cargoes, amid efforts to secure emergency imports and stabilize supply routes.

The developments come as global energy markets remain sensitive to geopolitical tensions affecting shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for LNG transport.
