United States: President Donald Trump has announced a new federal task force called the “Super Intelligence Force” to coordinate the US government’s approach to artificial intelligence and maintain American leadership in advanced AI development.
The task force will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and will work with consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations, critical infrastructure providers and AI companies. It will report directly to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
What will Trump’s Super Intelligence Force do?
The task force will assess the risks and opportunities linked to advanced AI and develop recommendations for the federal government. Reports indicate the group has been given 120 days to produce an assessment covering AI-related risks, opportunities and the government’s role in managing the technology.
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon technology official Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor are also part of the task force.
Trump has directed federal agencies to use “super intelligence” or “SI” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official communications, reflecting his administration’s new terminology for the technology.
Why is the US increasing its focus on AI policy?
The task force comes amid growing debate over AI safety, regulation and the need to maintain US competitiveness as the technology develops rapidly. Trump has generally opposed regulations that could restrict AI development and has emphasised maintaining an American advantage over countries including China.
The announcement also follows a White House meeting with major technology executives, who signed a voluntary agreement outlining commitments on AI safety and oversight. The agreement relies largely on companies to implement safeguards rather than imposing new statutory regulations.
The creation of the task force gives the Trump administration a central mechanism for coordinating AI policy across government while the US technology sector continues to expand its development of increasingly advanced systems.
