WASHINGTON/BENGALURU: The Trump administration is close to allowing Anthropic to restore public access to its Fable 5 artificial intelligence model, according to a report by Axios on Saturday, citing a source familiar with the matter.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report. Anthropic and the White House also did not respond to requests for comment.
The development comes after Anthropic abruptly disabled access to its most advanced AI systems, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, following a US government export control order issued on June 12 over national security concerns.
According to the Axios report, restrictions on Fable 5 could be lifted as early as next week, although final approval has not yet been confirmed. Discussions between the company and US officials are expected to continue over the weekend.
A second source cited in the report said Anthropic expects access to Fable to be restored soon, though the timeline remains uncertain.
On Friday, Anthropic said US authorities had permitted limited release of its Claude Mythos 5 model to selected “trusted” US organisations, partially reversing the earlier suspension order.
The company said it was also in talks with regulators regarding the broader release of Fable 5, which is designed for public use, while Mythos 5 includes modified safeguards and is intended for restricted deployment.
Both models are based on the same underlying AI system, but differ in their safety controls and intended user base.
The restrictions were initially imposed under export control measures linked to national security risks surrounding advanced artificial intelligence systems.
The administration’s possible move to ease limits on Fable 5 signals ongoing negotiations between US authorities and AI developers over how to balance innovation with security concerns.
Neither Anthropic nor the White House has provided an official timeline for a final decision.
