The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has praised Pakistan’s continued progress on economic reforms under the IMF programme, highlighting improvements in macroeconomic stability and growing international confidence.
She made the remarks after meeting Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on the sidelines of the IMF–World Bank Spring Meetings 2026 in Washington. Posting on social media platform X, Georgieva said it was “great to see Aurangzeb at the IMF Meetings,” adding that strong programme implementation has helped Pakistan stabilize its economy.
Georgieva stressed that sound policies and deeper structural reforms remain essential for sustaining long-term growth and improving living standards. The Pakistani finance ministry also noted her comments, stating that they reflect increasing global recognition of Pakistan’s reform efforts and commitment to economic discipline.
During the meetings, Aurangzeb also held discussions with IMF First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz, where he briefed officials on the economic impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict and Pakistan’s policy response.
Separately, the finance minister met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the launch of the Borrowers’ Platform in Washington. The discussions focused on global economic challenges, particularly the effects of the Middle East conflict on food and energy security in developing countries, as well as debt sustainability and financial transparency initiatives.
The UN chief reportedly acknowledged Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and expressed confidence in its continued constructive engagement on the global stage.
