NEW DELHI: Google Cloud services experienced intermittent disruptions across parts of India on Wednesday after a fire at a third-party data centre triggered an emergency shutdown of networking equipment, the company said.
According to Google Cloud, the incident forced an emergency power shutdown at the facility, isolating a local point of presence in Delhi and reducing network capacity across the region. The company did not disclose when the fire occurred or whether it resulted in damage or injuries.
The disruption affected network traffic across multiple Indian cities, including Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai, as well as surrounding areas, leading to periods of increased latency. The outage temporarily impacted cloud connectivity used by businesses and digital services dependent on Google’s infrastructure.
Google Cloud, a major global provider competing with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, said such incidents can have cascading effects on applications, websites, and enterprise systems relying on cloud-based operations and data processing.
The company stated that there was no immediate workaround available during the disruption, while restoration efforts were underway. It added that it was implementing additional traffic mitigation measures to limit further impact and stabilize services.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of interconnected cloud infrastructure, where localized failures at third-party facilities can affect broader regional network performance.
