Pakistan Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir briefed a visiting US Afghanistan War Commission delegation on Monday about the security challenges and regional dynamics Pakistan faced during the prolonged conflict in Afghanistan, the military’s media wing said.
The delegation, led by commission Co-Chairs Shamila N Chaudhary and Dr Colin F Jackson, met Field Marshal Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.
What did Munir tell the US delegation?
Munir highlighted the importance of incorporating Pakistan’s regional perspective and experience when assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the Afghanistan conflict.
The US Afghanistan War Commission delegation is reviewing the United States’ 20-year engagement in Afghanistan.
What issues were discussed?
According to ISPR, the meeting covered matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan’s role during the Afghanistan conflict, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan.
The delegation also acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the conflict and appreciated its continued contribution to regional peace and stability.
Pakistan has faced increased cross-border militant attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Islamabad has repeatedly called on Kabul to prevent Afghan territory from being used by militant organisations to conduct attacks inside Pakistan.
