Bilawal Alleges Rigging in AJK Polls, Vows Legal Challenge to Election Results

MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Wednesday vowed to challenge the results of the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections through legal and constitutional channels, alleging widespread electoral irregularities and urging the Election Commission to investigate the conduct of the polls.

Speaking at a press conference in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal said the PPP had evidence of alleged rigging at 30 polling stations, where he claimed turnout reached 99% and polling stations had been “occupied.” He said the party would pursue all available legal avenues to reclaim what it considers its rightful seats.

The remarks came after the first phase of polling in Mirpur division, where official results showed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) winning nine of the 13 contested seats, while the PPP secured four. The PML-N has rejected the PPP’s allegations of electoral manipulation.

What Allegations Has the PPP Raised?

Bilawal called on the Election Commission to immediately investigate the alleged irregularities before the second phase of AJK elections, scheduled for Aug. 2.

“We will not allow anyone to rob us of our votes,” he said, adding that the PPP possessed evidence supporting its claims.

He also proposed the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission comprising all stakeholders to investigate the allegations and present its findings. Bilawal urged political parties to suspend protests until such an inquiry was completed.

The PPP chairman said the party was prepared to accept the outcome of an independent investigation, including accountability if any wrongdoing by PPP representatives was established.

Bilawal also called for the restoration of internet services in Muzaffarabad, saying residents should have uninterrupted access to communication during the election period.

What Is the PPP’s Position on the Next Phase of Voting?

Despite raising concerns over the first phase of polling, Bilawal ruled out boycotting the second phase of the elections, warning that such a move would undermine the electoral process.

He said participating in the upcoming vote remained necessary to ensure public representation and prevent alleged irregularities from going unchecked.

Bilawal also criticized what he described as attempts to influence the electoral process through pressure and intimidation, expressing confidence that voters would reject such practices.

The Election Commission had not immediately responded to Bilawal’s allegations, while the PML-N has maintained that the election process was conducted fairly and has dismissed claims of rigging.
