Bangladesh Seeks India’s Clarification Over Sheikh Hasina’s Planned New Delhi Address

Bangladesh has asked India to clarify its position regarding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina‘s planned virtual address from New Delhi, warning that allowing political activities by a fugitive could adversely affect bilateral relations. The request marks Dhaka’s first official response to Hasina’s scheduled appearance at an August 5 event organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia (FCCSA) to commemorate the second anniversary of the 2024 student-led uprising that removed her government from power. According to the FCCSA, Hasina is expected to participate via video link alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and other speakers.

    What Position Has Bangladesh Taken?

Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, said Dhaka does not want improving ties with India to be undermined by political statements made by individuals facing criminal charges in Bangladesh. She stated that the government has repeatedly conveyed its concerns to New Delhi regarding Hasina and other Awami League leaders engaging in political activities from Indian territory. While noting that the event is not organised by the Indian government, she said Bangladesh would pursue the matter through diplomatic channels if necessary. There was no immediate response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

What Is the Background to the Dispute?

Relations between Bangladesh and India have remained sensitive since Hasina fled to India following the collapse of her government in August 2024 after weeks of nationwide protests. Bangladesh has formally requested her extradition, and in 2025 she was sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 crackdown, during which the United Nations estimated that up to 1,400 people were killed. Hasina has rejected the verdict as legally invalid and, in a recent interview, stated that she intends to return to Bangladesh in December. Despite tensions surrounding her presence in India, both governments have recently signalled interest in improving bilateral cooperation following the formation of Bangladesh’s new government earlier this year.
