United States: Actor Andrew Garfield has said he stopped using ChatGPT after portraying OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the upcoming film Artificial, saying the experience left him increasingly uneasy about artificial intelligence.
Why did Andrew Garfield stop using ChatGPT?
Garfield told Variety at the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5 that he had previously used ChatGPT as a research tool, describing it as a “fancy Google.” However, he said working on Artificial changed his perspective and made him more skeptical of the technology.
The actor said he became concerned that people promoting artificial intelligence may not fully understand its potential capabilities, which he described as irresponsible. Garfield added that he could more easily avoid AI because of his profession, while people working in other industries may have fewer alternatives.
How did Garfield prepare to portray Sam Altman?
Garfield said he spent months preparing to portray the OpenAI chief executive, describing the role as a significant responsibility because Altman is a living person. He told Esquire UK in August that he had never met Altman and relied on the film’s script, court transcripts and interviews to prepare for the role.
Altman has said he has seen the film’s trailer and has acknowledged Garfield’s portrayal, including the actor’s depiction of his walk. The two have never spoken directly.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Artificial focuses on the five-day period in November 2023 surrounding Altman’s removal and subsequent return as OpenAI CEO. Yura Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever, Ike Barinholtz portrays Elon Musk, Cooper Hoffman plays Greg Brockman and Mark Rylance portrays Geoffrey Hinton. Neon is scheduled to release the film in select cinemas on Christmas Day.
