ISLAMABAD: Attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz reached their highest monthly level in October since the US-Israel war with Iran began in February, according to data from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), Al Jazeera reported.

At least 35 attacks on commercial vessels were recorded across the region during October, making it the worst month for maritime incidents since the conflict began. March recorded the second-highest number, with approximately 30 attacks, according to UKMTO data.

What Happened to Oil Tankers in the Strait of Hormuz?

A crude oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile while completing its outbound transit through the Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO said on Friday. The agency said it had received the report from a verified source and advised vessels operating in the area to transit with caution.

Separately, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said four oil tankers had caught fire and exploded in the waterway while attempting to use what it described as unauthorised routes. Iranian state media reported that one vessel carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil had struck a naval mine.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Iranian military’s claims.

Why Are Shipping Attacks Raising Global Security Concerns?

The incidents have heightened concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key international shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes.

The increasing number of attacks threatens commercial shipping operations and raises the risk of disruptions to global energy supplies. Shipping companies and vessels operating in the region face growing security concerns amid continuing tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
