Washington: Support among Americans for US military action against Iran has fallen to 31%, while President Donald Trump’s approval rating remained at 33%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday.
Support for Iran War Falls Among Republicans
The four-day poll, which concluded on Monday, found that support for US military action had declined from 37% in March and 34% earlier this month. Support among Republican respondents fell to 69%, compared with 77% in March.
Trump’s 33% approval rating remained unchanged from the previous Reuters/Ipsos survey, leaving his rating at its lowest level recorded in the polling series during either of his presidential terms.
The conflict began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28. Trump has said military action was necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The conflict has since eased, although disruptions to regional oil exports have contributed to higher US gasoline prices.
Most Americans Expect Conflict to Continue
The poll found that 83% of Americans expect the war to continue for an extended period, up from 80% earlier this month.
The prolonged conflict is creating political pressure for Trump and Republican lawmakers ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Independent voters surveyed favored Democratic congressional candidates over Republicans by 33% to 19%.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,215 US adults nationwide and had a margin of error of approximately three percentage points.
