LONDON: British pharmaceutical company GSK plc on Tuesday announced a £1.9 billion ($2.52 billion) cost-saving program aimed at increasing investment in late-stage drug development and strengthening its research pipeline.

The three-year savings initiative is designed to simplify the company’s operations and redirect resources toward research and development, as GSK seeks to accelerate the launch of new medicines and rebuild its cancer treatment portfolio.

GSK Chief Executive Officer Luke Miels said the program would help fund investment in the company’s late-stage drug pipeline and research activities.

“To fund investment in the late-stage portfolio and R&D, we are starting a three-year cost-savings programme to simplify the organisation and to reallocate capital and resources,” Miels said in a statement.

Why Is GSK Cutting Costs Despite Strong Earnings?

The announcement comes as GSK increases efforts to expand its pharmaceutical pipeline ahead of expected patent expirations that could affect future revenue growth.

Under Miels’ leadership, the company has accelerated acquisitions and expanded its focus on oncology, including its record acquisition of Nuvalent in June.

GSK is aiming to develop more proprietary medicines while working toward its target of generating more than £40 billion in annual revenue by 2031.

The company said the savings would allow it to shift capital toward promising drug candidates, particularly those in late-stage clinical development.

How Did Investors React to GSK’s Announcement?

GSK shares rose 4.2% by 1120 GMT after the company reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter profit results and announced plans for additional investment in the United Kingdom.

The pharmaceutical company said it would invest £400 million in the UK, including funding for a new research and development center.

The investment and cost-cutting plan come as major pharmaceutical companies face pressure to improve research efficiency, expand drug pipelines, and prepare for increased competition from generic medicines following patent losses.

GSK said the savings program would support long-term growth by allowing the company to focus resources on developing new treatments and strengthening its position in the global pharmaceutical market.
