US Grants Iran 60-Day Sanctions Waiver Following Initial Peace Talks

WASHINGTON: The United States has granted Iran a 60-day sanctions waiver effective June 22 following the first round of talks under a newly emerging peace agreement between Washington and Tehran, marking a significant step in efforts to ease regional tensions.

The waiver was announced after negotiators from both countries reported progress during talks aimed at establishing a broader framework for long-term cooperation and stability.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the initial outcome of the negotiations but warned that Washington would closely monitor Tehran’s compliance with the agreement.

“If Iran doesn’t live up to their agreement, or if they’re not behaving, I will do what I have to do,” Trump told reporters, signaling that the United States could reconsider its position if commitments are not upheld.

The sanctions relief is intended to support confidence-building measures as both sides work toward a comprehensive agreement covering nuclear issues, regional security and economic cooperation.

The first round of discussions produced what mediators described as encouraging progress, including a roadmap toward a final deal and mechanisms for continued diplomatic engagement.

Officials from both countries are expected to continue technical-level negotiations in the coming weeks as efforts intensify to transform the preliminary understanding into a formal agreement.

The temporary sanctions waiver represents one of the most significant US concessions to Iran in recent years and is being closely watched by global energy markets and regional stakeholders for its potential impact on stability in the Middle East.
