UNITED STATES: US President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran pay compensation for decades of alleged damage, deaths, and regional instability, introducing new conditions that could further complicate negotiations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said Iran should compensate victims of wars, attacks, protests, and conflicts across the Middle East, describing the demand as payment for “50 years of damage.” He also called on Tehran to provide compensation for people killed in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Gaza, and for US personnel affected by regional violence.

The new demand came in response to Iran’s insistence that any future agreement must include compensation for economic losses caused by sanctions and military actions, along with guarantees against future US pressure.

Oil Prices Rise as Diplomatic Standoff Intensifies

Trump’s latest position has reduced expectations of a near-term agreement to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor that previously handled nearly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports before the conflict disrupted traffic.

Following Trump’s remarks, global oil prices climbed about 5%, reflecting renewed concerns over prolonged supply disruptions and regional instability.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials said negotiations with Oman on new shipping arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz were progressing, although Tehran maintained that sanctions relief, compensation, and security guarantees remain essential conditions before fully reopening the strategic waterway.

The widening gap between Washington and Tehran underscores the growing uncertainty surrounding efforts to restore maritime trade and reduce tensions in one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors.
