DOHA: Sweden opened their World Cup Group F campaign with a commanding 5–1 victory over Tunisia on Sunday, powered by a standout performance from midfielder Yasin Ayari, who scored twice in a dominant display.
Sweden struck early when Ayari capitalised on a defensive error inside the first seven minutes. Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak also played key roles in the opening goal sequence, as Sweden quickly established control of the match.
Alexander Isak doubled Sweden’s lead before halftime following a swift counterattack, while Tunisia briefly responded through a header from defender Omar Rekik to make it 2–1.
However, Sweden regained control in the second half, with Gyökeres scoring after being set up by Isak to extend the lead. Substitute Mattias Svanberg added a fourth goal, initially ruled offside but later confirmed after VAR review.
Ayari completed the scoring in stoppage time with a long-range strike, sealing Sweden’s biggest World Cup victory since 1938, when they defeated Cuba 8–0.
Sweden’s attacking duo of Isak and Gyökeres impressed throughout, with coach Graham Potter praising their growing partnership and overall performance, despite occasional lack of coordination.
Tunisia coach Sabri Lamouchi criticised his side’s defensive errors, calling the defeat painful and highlighting repeated mistakes that cost them control of the match.
