Russia and Ukraine have resumed military strikes following the expiry of a three-day ceasefire, with both sides reporting attacks and casualties on Tuesday.
Ukrainian authorities said a drone strike on Kyiv and surrounding regions resulted in one death in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region. Regional officials reported that a man was killed and a woman injured in the Synelnykove area, while at least three others were wounded in separate strikes across the region.
Air raid alerts were issued in Kyiv as military officials warned of incoming drones and urged residents to take shelter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said fighting continued throughout the ceasefire period, despite its intended pause.
On the Russian side, the defence ministry said its forces intercepted and destroyed 27 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov regions after the truce ended.
The temporary ceasefire had been announced by US President Donald Trump on Friday, ahead of Russia’s World War II Victory Day commemorations, with Trump saying he hoped it could mark “the beginning of the end” of the ongoing conflict.
However, both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of violating the truce even before its expiration, with reports of continued attacks on civilian areas.
Ukrainian officials also noted ongoing hostilities in eastern regions and rejected claims of any sustained pause in fighting.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said it was “too early” to provide details on any potential peace framework, following comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting the conflict was “heading to an end.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that while diplomatic groundwork existed, no concrete agreement was currently in place.
Russia has repeatedly demanded that Ukraine withdraw from parts of the Donbas region as a condition for any peace settlement, a proposal Kyiv has rejected.
