Why are groups planning a protest outside the concert?
United States: Pro-Palestinian groups are planning a demonstration near Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 19, ahead of Ed Sheeran’s concert. The Philly Palestine Coalition and Shut Down D&Z have announced plans to gather near NRG Station at 4:30 p.m. local time.
The protest follows the removal of rapper Macklemore from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour after his pro-Palestinian comments during performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium earlier this month. The tour promoter said venues had indicated they would not allow concerts to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup.
What has happened to Sheeran’s supporting acts?
Several other performers have withdrawn from the tour following Macklemore’s removal, including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Beoga and Lukas Graham. Sheeran has said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter after discussions with venues and was not his decision.
Sheeran is scheduled to perform at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, with the venue currently listing Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe as special guests. Police are aware of the planned demonstration and are coordinating with concert organisers on security arrangements.
