GILGIT: Delegations of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) held talks in Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday to discuss arrangements for forming the next regional government following recent legislative elections.
According to party statements, the PPP—having secured 11 seats in the 24-member Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly on the basis of unofficial results—has emerged as the largest party and is positioned to form the government.
The PML-N won six seats, while candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured two seats. The Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) won one seat, and independent candidates claimed four seats.
Both parties confirmed that detailed consultations were held on possible cooperation and government formation strategies, with proposals agreed to be forwarded to their respective central leaderships for final decision-making.
The PPP described the talks as a “major breakthrough,” stating that political coordination and governance options were discussed in line with democratic procedures and public interest considerations.
The PML-N, in its statement, said multiple proposals were reviewed and both sides agreed to continue the consultation process before finalising any arrangement after approval from central leadership.
Senior leaders from both parties attended the meeting, including PPP Secretary General Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Nasir Hussain Shah, and PPP GB chapter president Advocate Amjad Hussain. The PML-N delegation included Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam and former chief minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman.
Officials said final decisions regarding government formation will be taken after completion of consultations at the party leadership level.
Election results have not been fully consolidated due to pending re-polling in several constituencies, including Skardu-II, Astore-I, and three constituencies in Diamer.
