Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy to stabilise electricity tariffs and ensure uninterrupted power supply to support industrial growth.
Chairing a meeting on energy sector reforms, the premier emphasised the need to provide facilities to both industrial and domestic consumers, according to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
He instructed officials to reduce line losses by improving the transmission system and called for the adoption of modern technology across the energy sector. He also stressed the promotion of renewable energy projects to help address the country’s persistent power shortages.
The prime minister further directed that digital facilities be introduced to facilitate bill payments, adding that easing access for domestic consumers remains a key government priority. He also ordered continued strict action against electricity theft nationwide.
The directives come a day after Power Minister Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari cautioned that reliance on expensive fuels could increase the financial burden on consumers.
Leghari said the arrival of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo had helped restore normal electricity supply across the country. The LNG carrier, carrying around 140,000 cubic metres, docked at the Pakistan GasPort terminal and began feeding re-gasified LNG into the national grid.
Officials said efforts are underway to secure another LNG shipment expected between May 10 and 12.
The power minister expressed confidence that, barring technical faults in transmission lines, electricity loadshedding has been eliminated and consumers are unlikely to face further outages.
