Mbappe Laments France’s World Cup Exit After Semi-Final Defeat to Spain

ARLINGTON, Texas: France captain Kylian Mbappe described his side’s FIFA World Cup semi-final exit as an “immense disappointment” after Les Bleus suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain on Tuesday, blaming tactical and technical shortcomings for the loss.

The defeat ended France’s bid to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, with Spain producing a dominant display to secure their place in the tournament’s final.

Why Did France Fall Short Against Spain?

Speaking to French broadcaster M6 after the match, Mbappe said France failed to execute its game plan and was outplayed in key areas of the pitch.

“I don’t think we played the match we wanted to play — whether tactically, technically, or in terms of our overall performance level,” Mbappe said.

The French captain explained that France had intended to press Spain high up the field to disrupt their possession-based style but failed to implement the strategy effectively.

“Our goal was to press them high up the pitch to prevent them from settling into that slow, controlled rhythm because, when it comes to controlling the game, they are better than us. We failed to do that,” he said.

Mbappe also highlighted France’s struggles in midfield, where Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni were consistently outnumbered by Spain’s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabián Ruiz.

“We kept finding ourselves outnumbered 3-on-2 in midfield. Against Spain, that’s a real problem,” he added.

What Did Mbappe Say About France’s Future After the Defeat?

Despite the setback, Mbappe urged his teammates to respond positively and learn from the experience.

He said reaching the World Cup final had been a shared dream for the squad, but stressed that the team must now move forward with dignity.

“It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country the chance to keep dreaming and to make history,” Mbappe said.

“Right now, there is immense disappointment. It is hard to put into words just how disappointed the squad and I are.”

The Real Madrid forward added that the team would use the defeat as motivation for future competitions.

“We have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation, and move on to the next chapter because football waits for no one. We have to start over, put this failure behind us, and learn from it.”

Mbappe finished the tournament as one of France’s standout performers, scoring eight goals during Les Bleus’ run to the semi-finals.
