NEW JERSEY: Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has been added to the lineup for the first-ever FIFA World Cup final halftime show, organisers confirmed on Wednesday.
Bieber will perform alongside Madonna, Shakira and K-pop group BTS during the show at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
How Long Will the Halftime Show Last?
Organisers said the musical performance will last 11 minutes, easing speculation that the show could extend to 25 minutes.
However, the performance has renewed debate over football’s halftime regulations, which limit the interval to 15 minutes, raising questions about whether additional time will be required for stage setup and removal.
Who Is Producing the Performance?
The halftime show is being curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, marking the first Super Bowl-style entertainment performance during a FIFA World Cup final.
The event will also feature Burna Boy, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, Coldplay, the PS22 Chorus, and appearances by characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets.
What Is the Purpose of the Event?
The halftime show will support FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to improve access to education for children worldwide.
In a statement, Bieber said he was honoured to participate in the event and support the initiative.
“The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can,” he said.
What Has FIFA Said About the Event?
FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the performance as “the biggest stage ever,” saying the event is expected to attract an audience of billions worldwide.
Global Citizen co-founder Hugh Evans said the show could become the most-watched 11-minute live music performance in broadcasting history.
Has FIFA Held a Halftime Show Before?
FIFA tested the concept during last year’s Club World Cup final, also held at MetLife Stadium.
That halftime break lasted more than 24 minutes, prompting criticism over its potential impact on player performance.
The upcoming World Cup final will be the first time a halftime entertainment show is staged during football’s biggest match.
