Israel Election Looms as Netanyahu Faces Political Pressure Over Wars and Corruption

JERUSALEM: Upcoming elections in Israel are expected to be a defining moment for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing mounting political pressure over his handling of regional conflicts and ongoing corruption charges, according to reports and political analysts.

The general election, scheduled for October, could determine the future of Netanyahu’s nearly four-decade-long political career and his legacy as Israel’s longest-serving prime minister.

Netanyahu, widely regarded as a dominant figure in Israeli politics, is under increasing scrutiny amid criticism of his leadership during multiple military conflicts in the region, including wars involving Iran, Lebanon and Gaza.

Tensions in the region have escalated further following reports that Netanyahu had urged US President Donald Trump to support military action against Iran earlier this year, prompting retaliatory strikes that expanded into broader regional hostilities involving Israel, Iran and Gulf states.

Israel is also engaged in ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon, with divisions emerging between Israeli public opinion, US diplomatic pressure, and internal political factions over whether to continue or de-escalate military operations.

At the same time, Netanyahu faces widespread domestic criticism over the lack of an independent public inquiry into security failures surrounding the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza, which has drawn significant international condemnation.

The Israeli leader is also confronting long-standing corruption charges filed in 2019, which could result in imprisonment if he is convicted.

Political analysts say the combination of legal challenges, war fatigue, and diplomatic tensions with Washington is creating one of the most difficult political environments of Netanyahu’s career.

Analyst Nimrod Flaschenberg said Netanyahu is “in real trouble,” citing public uncertainty over Israel’s military strategy in Lebanon and growing scepticism about US-Israel coordination in regional conflicts.

Israel’s ongoing military presence in southern Lebanon and continued clashes with Hezbollah remain key flashpoints, with some officials in Washington reportedly pushing for a reduction in hostilities to support broader regional stability efforts.

Former Israeli military chief and political challenger Gadi Eisenkot criticised the government’s strategy, arguing that Israel has failed to translate military gains into a coherent diplomatic outcome, particularly in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, domestic political divisions persist, with some factions calling for continued military pressure on Hezbollah, while others advocate for a negotiated de-escalation amid growing regional instability and economic strain.

Reports suggest that US-Israel relations are also under strain over differences regarding the future of operations in Lebanon and broader regional strategy, though official positions remain publicly aligned.

Netanyahu’s opponents argue that his leadership has left Israel increasingly isolated internationally, while supporters maintain that continued military pressure is necessary to counter regional threats.

The upcoming election is expected to serve as a referendum on Netanyahu’s leadership, with outcomes likely to shape Israel’s foreign policy direction and its role in ongoing regional conflicts.
