INGLEWOOD, California: Iran’s national football team departed Los Angeles on Sunday after securing a goalless draw against Belgium at SoFi Stadium, a result that preserved its chances of advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
Before leaving, members of the Iranian delegation left a handwritten message in the team’s locker room thanking Los Angeles for its hospitality and expressing pride in the team’s performance during its stay in the city.
The note, later released by the Iranian Football Federation, described the team’s participation as one conducted with “pride,” “honour,” and “dignity” and thanked supporters for their backing throughout the tournament.
Los Angeles hosted both of Iran’s Group G fixtures, including a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in the opening match and Sunday’s stalemate against Belgium. The team is now set to travel to Seattle for its final group-stage encounter against Egypt.
Iran has been operating from a base in Tijuana, Mexico, commuting into the United States for matches due to restrictions surrounding its stay in the country. Several Iranian team officials and staff members have reportedly been barred from entering the United States, creating logistical challenges throughout the tournament.
US authorities have said the travel arrangements remain under review, while discussions regarding the easing of some restrictions continue.
Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei has repeatedly criticised the limitations imposed on the squad, arguing that his team has faced operational difficulties not experienced by other participating nations.
Despite the challenges, Iran remains in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. The team’s qualification hopes will be determined in its final Group G match against Egypt in Seattle.
The Iranian message concluded with an appeal for peace, mutual respect, and friendship among nations, reflecting the team’s effort to project a positive image amid ongoing political and travel-related tensions surrounding its participation in the tournament.
