Iran: Iran said Monday it had launched ballistic missile attacks against US military targets in Jordan in retaliation for an American strike on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, marking a renewed escalation in the six-month conflict.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it targeted two US military bases in Jordan and claimed the attacks caused heavy damage. Jordan’s military said it intercepted eight missiles but did not identify their origin.

Iranian state media also reported that Iranian forces had targeted Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates with drones. The UAE Ministry of Defence denied reports that the base had been targeted by missiles, describing them as false.

The UAE separately said its air force had engaged a drone over its territorial waters that had come from Iran, but did not provide further details.

Why did Iran launch attacks on US military positions?

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the attacks were carried out in response to US strikes that killed Iranian Revolutionary Guards personnel and civilians on Larak Island.

The United States said its forces had carried out limited strikes against Iranian rocket launchers on the island in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said the operation targeted Iranian mine-laying forces that posed an imminent threat to shipping.

The latest exchange comes after Washington shifted toward economic pressure on Tehran in recent weeks, although military confrontations have continued around the Strait of Hormuz.

What is the impact on the Strait of Hormuz and regional security?

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the conflict because of its importance to global energy supplies. Iran has effectively restricted traffic through the waterway, while the United States says its forces have completed clearing sea mines from international shipping routes.

US Central Command said American forces were continuing to monitor the area and remained prepared to protect commercial shipping.

The escalation has also affected global oil markets. Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel following news of the US strikes, while West Texas Intermediate climbed above $85.

Diplomatic efforts involving mediators including Pakistan and Qatar have continued, but previous ceasefire arrangements and negotiations have failed to produce a lasting settlement.
