ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednesday announced a three-day public holiday for Eid ul Adha, according to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division of Pakistan.
The notification stated that Prime Minister has approved holidays on May 26, 27 and 28, 2026 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) in connection with Eid ul Adha celebrations across the country.
The announcement comes as Pakistan prepares to observe Eid ul Adha on May 27, following the confirmation of the Zilhaj moon sighting by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee earlier this month.
The decision was made during a meeting held at the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Karachi, where the committee confirmed receipt of credible moon sighting testimonies from multiple regions across the country.
The Ruet committee subsequently declared that the first day of Zilhaj 1447 AH began on May 18, setting May 27 as the date for Eid ul Adha.
Eid ul Adha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the religious tradition of Prophet Ibrahim’s (PBUH) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command, a test of faith that was replaced with a ram.
The festival is marked across Pakistan with congregational Eid prayers, family gatherings, and charitable distribution of meat from sacrificed animals among relatives, friends, and underprivileged communities.
The government is expected to issue further administrative guidelines to ensure public service continuity during the holiday period, including arrangements in essential sectors.
