A Ghanaian footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed during an armed robbery attack on his club’s team bus while returning from an away fixture in the Ghana Premier League, the country’s football authorities confirmed.

According to the Ghana Football Association, the incident occurred on Sunday between Goaso and Bibiani as the team from Berekum Chelsea were travelling back after their match against Samartex in Samreboi.

The club stated that the bus was ambushed by armed men who blocked the road and opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes to escape the attack.

In its statement, Berekum Chelsea said masked assailants armed with guns and assault rifles began shooting at the bus, creating panic among passengers during the assault.

The Ghana Football Association later confirmed the death of 20-year-old Dominic Frimpong, describing him as a promising young player whose dedication reflected the spirit of domestic football in Ghana. The federation expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a major loss for both the club and national football.

Authorities have said security arrangements for teams travelling in domestic competitions will be reviewed and strengthened following the attack.

The incident has also renewed concern over player safety during league travel, coming after a similar bus attack in 2023 involving Legon Cities, although no injuries were reported in that case.
