England to Have No Curfew During Pakistan Test Series, Says Captain Joe Root

LONDON: England captain Joe Root has confirmed there will be no team curfew during the upcoming three-Test home series against Pakistan, saying players should be trusted to act responsibly off the field as preparations begin for the series starting August 19.

Root’s comments come after England’s team culture faced heightened scrutiny following a series of off-field incidents and disciplinary issues that led to calls for stricter conduct measures.

Why has England decided against imposing a team curfew?

Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast, Root said professional players should be trusted to make responsible decisions away from the field if they are expected to take responsibility during matches. He added that maintaining discipline would remain a shared responsibility between the players and new head coach Stephen Fleming.

The decision marks a shift from earlier proposals by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which had indicated stricter measures, including a midnight curfew, following disciplinary concerns.

What led to increased scrutiny of England’s team culture?

England’s dressing-room environment has been under the spotlight since last year’s Ashes series defeat and several off-field incidents. Former captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were suspended during the New Zealand series after breaching a team curfew, while other disciplinary issues also drew attention to player conduct.

Root assumed the Test captaincy following Stokes’ retirement in June, while Stephen Fleming replaced Brendon McCullum as head coach. Their first assignment together will be the three-match Test series against Pakistan.
