RUSSIA: At least one person was killed and two others were injured after an overnight drone attack targeted Russia’s Voronezh region, triggering large-scale fires at warehouse facilities and prompting an emergency response, regional authorities said on Tuesday.
Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev said Russian air defence systems intercepted 20 drones, including 15 over the city of Voronezh and five across surrounding districts. Despite the interceptions, falling drone debris struck multiple locations, causing extensive damage and igniting fires at two warehouse complexes belonging to a major company.
According to the governor, firefighters managed to contain one blaze covering approximately 16,000 square metres, while emergency crews continued battling a second fire spread across nearly 20,000 square metres. Authorities did not disclose the identity of the affected company, but confirmed that emergency services remained on-site to prevent the fires from spreading further.
Logistics Operations Disrupted as Security Concerns Persist
The attack also disrupted commercial operations across the region. Russian online retailer Wildberries confirmed that its logistics facilities in the Voronezh region were evacuated in accordance with emergency safety procedures, although the company did not immediately report any damage to its infrastructure.
The latest strike underscores the continued escalation of long-range drone attacks deep inside Russian territory, with critical logistics and industrial infrastructure increasingly becoming targets. Voronezh, located southwest of Moscow and relatively close to the Ukrainian border, has experienced repeated drone incidents in recent months despite intensified air defence measures.
Russian authorities have not identified those responsible for the attack, and an assessment of the full extent of the damage is ongoing. Emergency responders continue to secure affected areas as investigators examine the impact on regional infrastructure and supply networks.
