PORTUGAL: Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that he could retire from professional football after the upcoming season, saying he wants to leave a “spectacular legacy” after more than two decades at the highest level. The 41-year-old Portugal captain made the remarks in an interview with Vogue published on Sunday, saying the current campaign will “probably” be his final year in football.
Ronaldo has not formally announced his retirement, but his comments mark a significant shift from his previous statements about continuing his career. He remains under contract with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr until 2027 and is entering another season as he pursues one of the final major statistical milestones of his career.
Ronaldo Chases 1,000-Goal Milestone
Ronaldo has scored 976 goals for club and country during a senior career that began with Sporting in 2002. He is now 24 goals short of reaching 1,000, a landmark that could become one of the defining achievements of his final season.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has collected major honours with Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while also winning international trophies with Portugal. However, he was unable to secure a World Cup title during his career, with Portugal exiting the 2026 tournament in the last 16.
Ronaldo said retirement would leave a significant gap in his life after 25 years of professional football. He indicated that he intends to spend more time travelling, playing and watching padel, and enjoying time away from the demands of elite football.
For now, Ronaldo is expected to continue with Al-Nassr as he approaches the final phase of a career that has made him one of the most prolific goalscorers and decorated players in football history.
