Australia are facing mounting pressure after suffering a nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin, a result described by Australian media as one of the country’s most humiliating Test losses. The defeat was completed inside four days and has raised questions over the future of the top-ranked Test side ahead of the second and final match in Mackay, Queensland, starting Saturday.

Australia’s batting came under particular scrutiny after the hosts were dismissed for 198 in their first innings, while opener Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne are facing pressure over their places. Labuschagne recorded two poor dismissals in Darwin, continuing a prolonged struggle for form. Head coach Andrew McDonald and the selectors are also facing calls to consider changes to the batting lineup.

Ageing Bowling Attack Adds to Australia’s Concerns

Australia’s traditionally dominant bowling attack also struggled against Bangladesh in Darwin. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were unable to prevent Bangladesh from reaching 426 and securing a 228-run first-innings lead. Nathan Lyon, who turns 39 in November, was also outperformed by Bangladesh’s part-time off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Australia are expected to make a strong response in Mackay, but the defeat has intensified debate over whether the team needs wider changes rather than a short-term recovery. With a three-Test tour of South Africa scheduled for October, selectors may face difficult decisions over both the batting order and the ageing bowling attack.
