Pakistan Counters Afghan Taliban’s ‘Unprovoked’ Border Action

The Government of Pakistan said on Thursday that security forces are giving an “immediate and effective response” to what it described as unprovoked firing by the Afghan Taliban along multiple locations of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the Afghan Taliban regime had miscalculated by opening fire across the border, and that Pakistani forces had responded at once to counter the action.

The statement said Pakistan’s security forces were delivering “punishment” to Taliban positions in several sectors, including Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram and Bajaur, adding that multiple border posts and equipment on the Afghan side had been destroyed and heavy casualties inflicted.

The government reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting its territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens, saying any aggression would be met with full force.

There were no immediate independent confirmations of casualties or damage from the Afghan side. Pakistan’s account follows renewed cross-border clashes in recent days, including exchanges of fire in the Torkham and Tirah sectors that have significantly increased tensions between the two neighbours.

Pakistan has previously accused the Afghan Taliban of initiating hostilities, including firing artillery and small arms into Pakistani territory, which Islamabad said prompted the security forces’ response.

The border has remained volatile amid a series of recent hostilities, including artillery exchanges and reported skirmishes, further complicating already fragile relations between the two countries.
