US 10-Year Treasury Yield Breaks Above 5% as Global Bond Selloff Rattles Stocks

United States: The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5% on Tuesday to its highest level in nearly two decades, intensifying a global bond selloff and putting pressure on stock markets and borrowers.

The yield reached 5.0328% as investors remained concerned about inflation, rising government debt and expectations for higher US interest rates. Bond yields rise when prices fall, making the move a key signal of tightening financial conditions.

Why Is the Rise in Treasury Yields Raising Market Concerns?

The 10-year Treasury yield is a benchmark for borrowing costs across the US economy and global financial markets. Higher yields can increase government financing costs while also raising the cost of mortgages, corporate borrowing and other forms of credit.

The latest selloff could leave governments facing larger interest payments and less fiscal space for spending on social programmes, defence and other priorities.

Markets were also awaiting testimony from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has attempted to ease pressure on government debt markets through expanded debt buybacks.

Investors are also adjusting expectations for US interest rates. Traders expect a 25-basis-point rate increase on Wednesday, followed by further increases through the middle of next year.

Are Rising Bond Yields Becoming a Global Problem?

The pressure has extended beyond US markets. Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed above 3%, reaching a three-decade high, while Australia’s 10-year yield rose more than 7 basis points to 5.41%. Australian yields have gained about 40 basis points in three weeks.

Germany’s 10-year benchmark yield stood near 3.55%, its highest level since 2009, while France’s 10-year yield remained close to an 18-year high.

The rise in global yields has increased concerns about broader financial-market volatility, with higher borrowing costs potentially weighing on economic activity, corporate investment and equity valuations.

The developments also prompted officials in other major economies to monitor the situation. Britain’s Bank of England was reported to be considering whether to halt sales of its holdings of 20- and 30-year government bonds, while South Korea’s incoming finance minister said the government was prepared to act if market volatility worsened.
