Germany: Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Berlin wants to rapidly rebuild relations with Hungary during his first visit to Budapest by a German foreign minister in nearly seven years, following the ouster of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Wadephul said Hungary’s political change under Prime Minister Peter Magyar has created an opportunity to restore bilateral relations based on trust and reliability. Magyar took office this year after Orban’s 16-year rule.
Why Is Germany Seeking Better Relations With Hungary?
Wadephul said Germany has significant ground to cover in rebuilding ties with Budapest. Berlin views the change in Hungary’s government as an opportunity to strengthen political cooperation and restore mutual confidence.
What Changed After Orban’s Departure?
Germany has welcomed the new Hungarian government under Magyar, marking a shift from relations during Orban’s long tenure. Wadephul’s visit is expected to signal a fresh phase in German-Hungarian relations and closer engagement between the two governments.
