SAN SALVADOR: El Salvador’s opposition has selected a former lawmaker and a physician to challenge President Nayib Bukele’s ruling party in the country’s 2027 presidential election, seeking to end his dominance over national politics.
Opposition parties announced their candidates as they prepare for a contest expected to focus on Bukele’s security policies, economic record and expanded executive powers.
The opposition ticket will feature former lawmaker Manuel Flores and doctor Celia Medrano, who will represent competing opposition forces against Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party.
Who Are El Salvador’s Opposition Candidates for the 2027 Election?
Manuel Flores, a former legislator, has emerged as one of the opposition figures seeking to challenge Bukele’s political influence after years of weakened opposition representation.
Celia Medrano, a doctor and human rights advocate, is also expected to campaign on issues including democratic institutions, social policies and government accountability.
The candidates face a difficult electoral environment, with Bukele maintaining strong public support following his government’s aggressive crackdown on gangs that dramatically reduced crime rates.
Can the Opposition Challenge Bukele’s Political Dominance?
Bukele, who first won the presidency in 2019, remains one of the most popular leaders in Latin America, largely due to his security strategy that led to the arrest of tens of thousands of suspected gang members.
Critics, however, have accused his administration of weakening democratic checks and balances, restricting civil liberties and concentrating power in the presidency.
Bukele’s party secured a strong majority in the Legislative Assembly in the 2024 elections, further strengthening his political position.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to test whether opposition groups can overcome internal divisions and build a nationwide challenge against Bukele’s continued influence over Salvadoran politics.
