Zelenskiy seeks to replace Prime Minister, triggering government reshuffle

Ukraine: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has announced plans to replace Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko after just one year in office, saying the move is aimed at implementing an “updated political strategy.” The proposed change, which requires parliamentary approval, will automatically trigger the resignation of the entire government under Ukrainian law. Zelenskiy also confirmed that changes would be made in the country’s law enforcement leadership.

What role could Yulia Svyrydenko assume next?

Zelenskiy thanked Svyrydenko for her service and revealed that he had offered her the opportunity to lead a new area of Ukraine’s relations with a key international partner. Although no official appointment has been announced, media reports indicate she is being considered for the post of Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.

What is the background of Yulia Svyrydenko?

An economist by profession, Yulia Svyrydenko became Ukraine’s prime minister in July 2025 after serving as Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Development and Trade and later as Deputy Head of the Presidential Office. Her resignation will take effect only after approval by parliament.

What has prompted the government reshuffle?

The reshuffle comes amid growing political pressure over Ukraine’s largest corruption scandal in recent years. The “Midas” investigation concerns an alleged $100 million kickback scheme involving state-owned nuclear energy company Energoatom. Authorities have named businessman Timur Mindich, a former associate of Zelenskiy, and former presidential office chief Andriy Yermak as suspects. Both have denied all allegations.

Who are the leading candidates to become the next prime minister?

Several senior officials are reportedly under consideration to replace Svyrydenko, including Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, and Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi. According to opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Koretskyi is currently regarded as one of the strongest contenders for the premiership.

Why is this reshuffle significant for Ukraine?

The leadership changes come as Ukraine seeks to reassure international partners of its commitment to governance reforms and anti-corruption measures while continuing to manage the challenges of the ongoing war with Russia. The reshuffle is expected to reshape both the government’s political direction and its engagement with key international allies.
