SK Hynix Raises Record $26.5bn in Largest-Ever US Listing by a Foreign Company

South Korean chipmaker’s blockbuster Nasdaq debut underscores surging global investor demand for artificial intelligence as AI-driven semiconductor boom accelerates.

SEOUL: South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has raised $26.5 billion through its New York stock market debut, completing the largest-ever US share offering by a foreign company and reinforcing investor confidence in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor industry.

The company announced on Thursday that it sold 177.9 million American Depositary Shares (ADSs) at $149 per share, with trading scheduled to begin on the Nasdaq on Friday. Each ADS represents one-tenth of a common share listed in Seoul.

Why is SK Hynix’s listing significant?

The record-breaking offering marks the largest foreign listing ever completed in the United States and provides SK Hynix with direct access to one of the world’s deepest capital markets as demand for AI-related investments continues to surge.

The South Korean company is a major supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in Nvidia’s advanced AI processors, placing it at the centre of the global AI supply chain.

    What is driving investor interest?

Investor demand for the offering exceeded supply by more than seven times, reflecting strong confidence in semiconductor manufacturers benefiting from the AI boom.

SK Hynix’s market capitalisation surpassed $1 trillion in South Korea earlier this year, while its share price has more than tripled during 2026 amid soaring demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence applications.

The rally has also helped propel South Korea’s benchmark Kospi Index more than 70% higher this year, supported by gains in both SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.

How is the AI boom reshaping the semiconductor industry?

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has triggered unprecedented investment across the global semiconductor sector as technology companies accelerate spending on AI infrastructure.

Shares of rival chipmakers Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology have more than doubled in recent months, while companies across the AI ecosystem continue to attract record levels of capital.

The listing follows a wave of high-profile AI-related fundraising as investors increasingly seek exposure to companies supplying critical computing hardware.

    What are analysts saying?

Market analysts say the Nasdaq listing will serve as an important test of whether investor enthusiasm for AI-driven memory chip manufacturers can be sustained.

Experts also note that listing in the United States provides SK Hynix with broader access to institutional investors and greater liquidity than South Korea’s domestic market.

However, some analysts cautioned that increased investment flows into US-listed shares could divert capital away from South Korea’s stock market, potentially affecting domestic market liquidity.

What does the listing mean for South Korea?

SK Hynix has pledged to channel significant investment into expanding South Korea’s semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence capabilities.

The listing comes shortly after the South Korean government unveiled plans for more than $880 billion in joint investment initiatives with SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics aimed at strengthening the country’s global leadership in advanced chip production and AI technologies.

With market valuations exceeding $1 trillion, both SK Hynix and Samsung now rank among a select group of global technology giants alongside Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet.
