Trump Makes First Flight on Qatar-Donated Air Force One Amid Ethical Scrutiny

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday made his first official flight aboard a newly modified Air Force One aircraft donated by Qatar, defending the controversial gift and dismissing criticism over its ethical and security implications.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Joint Base Andrews for North Dakota, Trump described the aircraft as unprecedented and praised Qatar for providing the luxury Boeing 747-8, which has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential security and operational requirements.

What did President Trump say about the new aircraft?

Trump said he was “excited” to undertake the aircraft’s inaugural presidential flight, calling it unlike anything previously used by a US president.

He argued that adapting the Qatari-donated aircraft cost American taxpayers significantly less than commissioning a comparable replacement, adding that the United States would not have been willing to spend the amount required to build a similar aircraft.

The president also said Qatar’s Emir had insisted on donating the aircraft as a contribution to the United States after Trump initially requested permission to use it.

Why has the aircraft sparked controversy?

The donation has drawn criticism from lawmakers and ethics experts, who have raised concerns over the acceptance of an aircraft worth hundreds of millions of dollars from a foreign government.

Critics have questioned the constitutional, ethical and national security implications of integrating a foreign-donated aircraft into the presidential fleet, despite extensive security modifications carried out before it entered service.

The aircraft was donated by Qatar last year and has since undergone testing and upgrades to meet presidential standards.

How does the flight relate to broader scrutiny facing Trump?

The inaugural flight came one day after financial disclosures showed Trump earned approximately $1.2 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency ventures during his first year after returning to office, prompting renewed scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest.

Trump rejected allegations of impropriety, maintaining that accepting the aircraft represented a cost-effective solution for the United States.

Why is the aircraft being used now?

The Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8 will serve as an interim presidential aircraft until Boeing delivers two newly built Air Force One jets, which have been delayed by production setbacks and rising costs.

Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration over the delays in replacing the aging Air Force One fleet, making modernization of the presidential aircraft a longstanding priority.

The president travelled to North Dakota to attend an event at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library as part of commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
