Trump Says US and Israel Will Hold Off on New Iran Strikes Pending Potential Deal

WASHINGTON, (AFP): US President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States and Israel had agreed to delay any new strikes against Iran, saying the decision was linked to efforts to reach a deal to end the ongoing conflict.

Trump said Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had requested a pause in military action and that Washington had agreed to hold off on attacks temporarily.

“Based on this request, I have agreed… to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The announcement came after concerns grew that fighting could escalate following Trump’s warnings of possible further strikes against Iran, including potential attacks on energy infrastructure.

What Conditions Did Trump Set for Ending the Conflict?

Trump said any agreement would require the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.

He said Israel had joined the commitment to pause military action while negotiations continued.

Earlier, Trump had warned that the United States was prepared to launch major military action against Iran, describing American forces as ready for possible operations.

Reports had suggested Washington and Israel were considering renewed strikes, with energy facilities among potential targets.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has continued for more than five months, with recent weeks seeing renewed exchanges of attacks.

How Did Regional Leaders Respond to the Situation?

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly urged Trump to avoid further escalation during a phone call on Saturday, according to US officials cited by Axios.

The Saudi leader expressed concerns over potential strikes and called for de-escalation, the report said.

The White House did not immediately comment on the reported conversation.

The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military preparations in the region.
