NEW DELHI: India’s civil aviation authorities have launched an investigation into an Air India flight that experienced a sudden mid-air plunge, while the pilot-in-command undergoes a confirmatory psychoactive substance test following an initial screening.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Airbus A320, carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members, lost approximately 300 feet (91 metres) during a flight from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi on August 4 before stabilising and landing safely.
Eight passengers and four cabin crew members were admitted to hospital after the aircraft landed. Authorities said their conditions were stable.
Following the incident, both pilots underwent mandatory psychoactive substance screening. The ministry said the pilot-in-command’s screening result required confirmatory laboratory testing, while the final report is still awaited.
AAIB Launches Investigation into Serious Incident
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has classified the occurrence as a “Serious Incident”, prompting the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to begin a formal investigation.
Both pilots have been removed from flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation and laboratory analysis.
The ministry said further action will be determined based on the findings of the investigation and the confirmatory test results.
Air India confirmed that post-flight screening tests were conducted but stated that the results had not yet been shared with the airline.
Incident Adds to Challenges Facing Air India
Videos circulating after the incident showed cabin baggage scattered throughout the aircraft cabin, reflecting the impact of the sudden altitude loss.
The latest episode comes as Air India continues efforts to modernise its operations under the Tata Group, which acquired the airline in 2022. The carrier has expanded its fleet plans and restructured its operations but has also faced operational challenges, including aircraft delivery delays and disruptions linked to regional airspace restrictions.
The airline has also appointed former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as its new chief executive as part of its ongoing turnaround strategy.
