Markets Turn Volatile Amid Fears Over Fragile US-Iran Truce

Global financial markets turned volatile on Thursday as oil prices rose and equities declined amid growing uncertainty over the durability of a recently announced US-Iran ceasefire.

The truce, announced earlier this week following a statement by US President Donald Trump, had initially triggered a sharp rally in stock markets and a steep drop in crude prices. However, renewed tensions, linked to continued military activity in Lebanon, have raised concerns that the agreement may not hold.

Oil benchmarks reversed course, with prices climbing after reports suggested the ceasefire could be undermined by ongoing hostilities and disagreements over its scope. Market participants cited fears over disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

Equity markets across Asia declined, reflecting investor caution. Major indices in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Seoul, and Taipei all recorded losses as uncertainty over regional stability weighed on sentiment.

Statements from US officials indicated that the terms being discussed differ between the parties, with Washington and Tehran reportedly holding divergent interpretations of the agreement. Iran has also signaled that continued strikes in Lebanon and other developments could invalidate the ceasefire framework.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary leadership has warned that alleged violations, including continued attacks, airspace incursions, and disagreements over nuclear-related provisions, undermine the basis for further negotiations.

Hezbollah has also reportedly responded with rocket fire toward Israel, adding to concerns of renewed escalation in the region.

Despite earlier optimism, analysts say markets remain sensitive to developments surrounding the ceasefire and the status of maritime routes in the Gulf. Reports of shipping disruptions in recent months have already affected global supply chains, with hundreds of vessels impacted since the onset of hostilities.

Oil prices had fallen sharply following the initial ceasefire announcement but have since recovered part of those losses, highlighting ongoing volatility as investors assess the likelihood of sustained de-escalation.

Attention is now turning to upcoming diplomatic engagements, where further talks are expected to determine whether the ceasefire can be stabilized or whether tensions will escalate again, potentially affecting global energy markets and financial stability.
