Canada PM Carney Visits India to Boost Trade and Diplomatic Ties

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday for a diplomatic visit aimed at resetting bilateral relations and boosting economic cooperation, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. The visit marks Carney’s first major official trip to India since taking office and comes after several years of strained relations between the two countries.

Carney’s schedule includes meetings with business leaders in Mumbai to promote collaboration in trade, investment, energy, and technology sectors. He will also travel to New Delhi for high-level discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on advancing the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and other initiatives to expand bilateral trade.

Relations between Canada and India have been tense in recent years, following allegations by Canada in 2023 of Indian involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist activist in Canada—a claim India denied. The visit is seen as a symbolic reset, aimed at rebuilding trust and fostering stronger economic and diplomatic engagement.

Officials indicated the trip may include talks on energy, critical minerals, and clean technology cooperation, though no major trade deals are expected to be finalized immediately. Observers note the visit reflects Canada’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy, with subsequent stops planned in Australia and Japan, aimed at diversifying trade partnerships and strengthening Canada’s global economic footprint.
