The United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan are preparing for a pivotal Group D encounter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, with both teams desperate to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The UAE arrive off their first win of the competition, a narrow victory over Canada, but remain under pressure to address weaknesses in their middle order, particularly against spin bowling. Afghanistan, led by captain Rashid Khan, suffered a heart-breaking loss in their previous outing that went to two Super Overs, leaving them still without a victory in the group.
With South Africa and New Zealand firmly entrenched at the top of Group D, both UAE and Afghanistan must not only win this match but also rely on favourable results elsewhere to keep their Super Eight qualification hopes realistic.
Afghanistan’s spin attack, featuring Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi, is expected to test the UAE batting lineup, which has struggled against high-quality spin in recent games. Rashid said his side had played “good cricket” despite their narrow defeat and emphasized the importance of more frequent competition against stronger teams to improve overall performance.
Both teams enter the fixture acutely aware that a defeat would seriously dent their chances of progressing beyond the group stage of the tournament.
