Thijs De Ridder scored 32 points and No. 17 Virginia tied a school record by overcoming a 19-point deficit for a 100-97 double-overtime win against Notre Dame in Atlantic Coast Conference action on Tuesday in South Bend, Ind.

Sam Lewis added 21 points for the Cavaliers, including the tying 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime and six points in the second OT.

Virginia (17-3, 6-2 ACC) matched its largest comeback ever, set in a 93-90 win against Arizona on Nov. 12, 2006. Chance Mallory added 17 points and Devin Tillis had 12.

Sophomore guard Cole Certa scored a career-high 34 points for the Fighting Irish (11-10, 2-6) but was off the mark with a potential tying 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining.

Notre Dame lost its 12th consecutive game against a ranked opponent. Jalen Haralson added 20 points and Brady Koehler had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Braden Shrewsberry scored 18 — 15 in the first half.

The lead seesawed in the second OT, with Mallory’s 3-pointer giving Virginia a 92-91 edge with 1:49 left.

Certa made a driving layup for a 93-92 lead, but De Ridder put the Cavaliers back in front with two free throws.

After Certa missed a 3-pointer from the logo, Dallin Hall extended Virginia’s lead to 96-93 with two free throws with 55 seconds to go.

Haralson made two at the charity stripe to make it 96-95 with 45 seconds left as De Ridder fouled out.

Lewis knocked down a jumper from the foul line with 16 seconds to play to give the Cavaliers a 98-95 lead, and Certa’s 3-pointer was off the mark with 11 seconds left.

Lewis iced the win with two free throws with 5 seconds left.

Virginia never led in the first overtime and trailed 85-82 after two Certa free throws with 19 seconds left. Notre Dame opted not to foul and Lewis buried the tying triple from the top of the key with 3 seconds left.

The Cavaliers trailed 52-40 five minutes into the second half when their shots finally started falling. A 20-4 run put Virginia up 60-56 with 7:19 to play.

Certa drained a deep 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to give the Fighting Irish a 73-71 lead.

Tillis tied it with two free throws for Virginia with 18 ticks left and Shrewsberry missed a 3 at the end of regulation.

The Cavaliers trailed 44-35 at halftime. The Fighting Irish took their largest lead at 39-20 with 6:06 remaining in the first half on consecutive 3-pointers by Certa.
