ISLAMABAD: Iran has warned US President Donald Trump against renewed military action, while an oil tanker reportedly caught fire after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions continued to rise across the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of trying to draw Washington into another war to avoid prison. Separately, a Houthi projectile injured six people in Saudi Arabia’s Najran city, while Pakistan and Egypt condemned attacks against the kingdom.
The developments came as Russia prepared for talks with Iranian officials in Tehran and regional governments continued diplomatic contacts over the deteriorating security situation.
Iran Warns US Against Another Military Confrontation
Araghchi issued the warning in a post on X on Sunday, claiming Iran had emerged stronger from the previous conflict with its adversaries.
“Last time you wanted to ‘finish the job’, Iran emerged even stronger. Want to try your luck again? Be our guest. But be careful; we have unfinished jobs too,” he wrote.
The Iranian foreign minister accused Netanyahu of pushing the United States towards another war, warning that the consequences would affect Israel and Washington.
His remarks followed reports that Trump had endorsed Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s parliamentary election scheduled for October 27.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said an oil tanker caught fire and exploded after hitting a naval mine in the southern Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media.
The report did not identify the vessel or provide information about its crew, possible casualties or environmental damage. The incident could not be independently verified.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for international oil shipments, and any disruption to shipping through the waterway raises concerns about regional security and global energy supplies.
In a separate development, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Gulf governments, investment funds and businesses against supporting artificial intelligence and data companies that Tehran accuses of assisting military invasions or contributing to the killing of children.
Ghalibaf announced the planned establishment of a “Persian Gulf Data Authority” in a post on X and urged regional stakeholders to withhold investments, land and energy resources from the companies concerned. He did not explain how the proposed authority would operate or what enforcement powers it would have.
Iran’s parliament also approved Mehrdad Akhlaqi Ketabchi as defence minister on Sunday, according to state media. Ketabchi, a former head of the country’s Aerospace Industries Organisation, will oversee Iran’s defence production and procurement apparatus.
Houthi Projectile Injures Six in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued a danger alert for the southwestern city of Abha before announcing that the threat had passed.
Authorities urged residents to follow safety instructions and avoid gathering or filming in affected areas. They did not disclose the nature of the threat.
Separately, a Houthi projectile struck a residential area in Najran near the Yemeni border, injuring at least six people, Saudi Civil Defence said.
The agency said the incident also damaged three homes and three vehicles.
The attack comes amid escalating Houthi strikes against Saudi Arabia, including reported attacks on airports and energy infrastructure.
Pakistan and Egypt condemned the attacks during a telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sunday.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both ministers expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed their support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.
They also discussed cooperation under the R-4 framework, which includes Pakistan, Egypt, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, and expressed hope that the group’s next meeting would take place soon.
In a separate call, Dar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the regional situation and the ongoing Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Baghdad.
Dar stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address regional challenges. Both sides agreed to remain in contact, the Foreign Office said.
Lavrov to Visit Tehran for Talks with Iranian Officials
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Tehran on Monday for consultations with Iranian officials, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said.
The visit is aimed at following up on the implementation of bilateral agreements between Russia and Iran.
Meanwhile, Trump endorsed Netanyahu on Sunday in a post on his Truth Social platform ahead of Israel’s upcoming parliamentary election, according to Reuters.
The latest developments come amid continuing tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, alongside security concerns in the Gulf and growing diplomatic efforts to address regional instability.
